今回取り上げる表現は、fight back tearsです。これはfight back [choke back] (the) tears「涙をこらえる」(『ジーニアス英和辞典　第4版』大修館書店)という意味になります。fight backという形で、「〔感情・涙を〕抑える、抑制する、こらえる」（英辞郎 on the WEB）という意味があり、涙のみならず、様々な感情を抑えるといった時にも使えるのではないでしょうか。fightという1語のみでも、"to try very hard not to have or show a feeling"(LDOCE)という意味があるそうです。
