Finding Ways to Fight Bullying

What triggers some students to bully others? According to a new report by the National Police Agency that included a questionnaire asking students why they wanted to bully others, the most common response was that the victims seemed “weak or didn’t resist” (40%). Next, it was because they were being “goody-goody or cheeky” (18%). This was followed closely by the crime of being “dull and slow” (15%).

goody-goodyが気になったので取り上げます。まずCambridge Dictionaries Onlineで調べてみたところ、’someone who behaves in a way intended to please people in authority’と定義されていました。次に手持ちの辞書で引いてみると、「善良｛信心家｝ぶった（人）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）、その他にも「めめしい（男）」(ibid)という意味もありました。(Shou-VR*)
