薬や医療系データベースを操作するコンピュータ“Watson”が発表されることにより、医療界には革命が訪れようとしています。ここで使われているclever-clogs (- dick)は、イギリスのスラングで、しばしば「自信家」と日本語で訳されます(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。定義としては、“too clever”(Webster)や“someone who is annoying because they are always right or always think they are right”(LDOCE)を代表例として挙げることができます。

記事のタイトルには、Doctor Watsonとあり、『シャーロック・ホームズ・シリーズ』に登場するWatsonを想起させます。いつか、コンピュータに“Elementary, my dear?”なんて言われる日が来るのでしょうか。それこそ“clever-clogs”と言いたくなってしまいます。(Othello)
