本日はsit-comの”what i like about you（『恋するマンハッタン』）”を見ていました。シーズン１の第１２話の中です。
たまたまゲイリーは中学生の頃の先生会いました。ヒドイ仕打ちを受けた話を主人公のホリーとその姉ヴァレリーに話しているところです。
Gary: Believe me, that man is evil.
Val: What did he do?
Gary: He used to single me out to go to the board. Whenever I got stuck doing a problem, which was more often than I liked.... he’d blast this air horn and humiliate me in front of the class.

「たった一つの」や「未婚の」の意味があるsingleです。ここのsingleは動詞で使われています。後のセリフから意味は推測しやすいと思います。LDOCEをひいてみると、single somebody/ someone outというPVの形で” to choose one person or thing from among a group because they are better, worse, more important etc than the others”とありました。つまり、ゲイリーの最後のラインは「先生は決まって僕を当てて、黒板の前に出すんだ。」あたりの訳になるでしょうか。(Minnesota)
