a stone's throwを辞書で調べてみると、a stone's throw (away)「<…の>すぐ近く、近距離」（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第２版』三省堂）と定義されていました。LDOCEには、a stone's throw from sth/away (from sth)"very close to something"と定義されています。石を投げつけられるくらい近い、という事でしょうか。
また、within a stone's castも同じ意味で、「石を投げれば届くほどの所に」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）との事です。The Phrase Finderというサイトには語源について書かれていました。
