Kawaguchi may return for another stint as foreign minister

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Upper house lawmaker Yoriko Kawaguchi may return for another stint as foreign minister under the new Japanese government to be led by Liberal Democratic Party chief Shinzo Abe, sources close to him said Sunday.

Putting the final touches on the lineup for his Cabinet, which is likely to be formally inaugurated Wednesday, Abe is leaning toward choosing Kawaguchi for her past experience as foreign minister from 2002-2004 under then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Kawaguchi also served as environment minister in 2001 under then Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori.

But the situation surrounding Kawaguchi's appointment as foreign minister is fluid given calls by some LDP members for giving the post to former Financial Services Minister Toshimitsu Motegi or former LDP secretary general Nobuteru Ishihara, the sources said. Motegi is also being tapped as a candidate for economy, trade and industry minister or internal affairs and communications minister under the Abe cabinet, according to the sources.
