自分が昔住んでいた地域のニュースを見ていたら悲しい事件が起きていました。最近は悲しいニュースが多くて気が滅入りますね。今回取り上げたいのは、本日昼休みに先生が仰っていたイディオムです。

Authorities: Mother killed son, herself by setting fire in Scotch Plains home

Katherine Halverson, 32, and her son, Jeremy Scott McDonald Jr., were at first thought to have died after getting caught in the fire in their home Tuesday night. But the side-by-side doors were cordoned off with yellow police tape — and the two second-floor windows at the front of the house were boarded up. Otherwise, there appeared to be no damage, with the windows on the same floor intact.

side-by-sideには「〔…と〕並んで 〔with〕」という意味（『新英和中辞典』研究社）があります。side-by-sideの後にdoorを付けることで同じようなドアが二つ並んである状態のことを表します。これはsemi-detached houseや二世帯住宅によく見受けられるタイプのドアだと思いました。（Sugar）。
