日本人としては、そう珍しいことではありませんが、他の文化圏に属する国から見たら、日本人が抱く考えと同じようには見えないのでしょう。The Economistには、日本企業がする養子についての記事がありました。

ここでnatureに注目してみます。これは普通「自然」という意味がありますが、元は「本質、天性」などを表す言葉です。

OEDを参照すれば、多くの日本の英和辞典とは違い、まっさきに“The essential qualities or properties of a thing; the inherent and inseparable combination of properties essentially pertaining to anything and giving it its fundamental character.”と定義されています。記事の文脈では、“ The inherent and innate disposition or character of a person (or animal). Also, (one's) better nature.”という意味がわかりやすいかもしれません。どちらも、1300年から使われ始め、現在でもnatureのnatureな意味は使われています。

次のshortchangeも面白い言葉で、元は「〜につり銭を少なく渡す」という意味から「〜を不公平に扱う」という意味になりました。

以上を踏まえると、「子息が運命とは不公平だと感じるのなら、ある親は生まれの息子の意見を無視して、婿養子を採用する」という意味になります。(Othello)

本文とは関係なく質問なのですが、The Economistの記事は毎週無料で３本の記事しか読めませんでしたっけ？以前は、10本読めた気がしましたが、思い違いでしょうか。
