今回取り上げるのはin the fast laneです。UG先生も今回の西行で何度も使われたであろう「(高速道路の)追い越し車線」がまず想起される意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)ですが、この見出しでは他の意味があるように思えます。英英辞書を参照してみると、"a way of living that involves exciting activity and spending a lot of money"とありました(OPED)。wikitionaryには"(idiomatic) In a lifestyle, employment position, or　other set of circumstances where the rapid pace is exciting, frantic, or risky."とありました。つまり「わくわくするような生活」さらには「緊張感にあふれた、危なっかしい生活や労働環境や状況」というニュアンスがある事がわかります。追い越し車線を使っている状況や人をメタファーしていて面白い表現だと思いました。(EnDough)
