Unexploded Shell Found in Sendai Airport

Sendai, Miyagi Pref., Oct. 30 (Jiji Press)--An unexploded shell has been found within the premises of Sendai airport in northeastern Japan, the transport ministry said Tuesday.
As a result, all 92 flights to and from the airport scheduled for Tuesday were canceled.
Workers found what appeared to be an unexploded shell buried some 50 centimeters under the ground near a taxiway late on Monday during restoration work after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, according to the ministry's Sendai airport office and the Miyagi prefectural police department.

Early Tuesday morning, the object, which is 110 centimeters long and 35 centimeters in diameter with an estimated weight of 250 kilograms, was confirmed to be a U.S. military bomb that was apparently dropped during World War II.
The runways of the airport, which straddles the Miyagi Prefecture cities of Natori and Iwanuma, have been shut down. How to dispose of the shell will be determined later on Tuesday.
