Japan Ex-Prime Min. Aso May Meet with S. Korea President
Tokyo, Oct. 6 (Jiji Press)--Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is arranging a meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung Bak during his three-day visit to the country from Sunday, informed sources said Saturday. Aso, a veteran politician of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, will visit the country as deputy chairman of the Japan-Korea Cooperation Committee to attend a joint general meeting with the group's South Korean counterpart.
He hopes to pay a courtesy call on the president while he is in Seoul, the sources said. With the bilateral relationship mired in bickering over the disputed Sea of Japan islands, known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, Aso's visit is apparently designed to seek a way to improve the strained ties. Regarding the visit, LDP leader Shinzo Abe told reporters in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Saturday that Aso "has a relationship of trust with South Korea."
