Typhoon Jelawat bringing heavy rain
A powerful typhoon is bringing heavy rain and strong wind to some parts of western and central Japan. Japan's Meteorological Agency reports that Typhoon Jelawat was near the coast of Wakayama Prefecture as of 3 PM on Sunday. The typhoon was heading northeast at 45 kilometers per hour with winds near its center reaching 144 kilometers per hour. Parts of western and central Japan were engulfed in the storm zone.
Weather officials are warning of the danger of windstorms, landslides, and flooding. Jelawat has already battered the southern prefectures of Okinawa and Kagoshima. More than 100 people have been injured in the 2 prefectures. Nearly 150,000 households were still without electricity. The typhoon has also disrupted air travel in Japan. Nearly 500 flights have been cancelled so far.
