ちょっと気づいたですが、water cannonはfireという動詞とも共起するのですね。

これまでfireは「（銃砲・ミサイル・ロケットなどの火器を）発射する」だけだと思っていました。しかし、考えてみれば「（質問・非難などを）浴びせかける、（石などを）投げつける、ぶつける」など火器に限らない比喩用法があるのことを改めて学んだ次第です。（GP）

Vessels belonging to the Japanese Coast Guard fired water cannons at dozens of fishing boats from Taiwan and eight Taiwan Coast Guard vessels to turn them away from waters that Japan considers its own, near the Senkaku islands which are already at the center of a bitter dispute with China.
