help

日本の矜恃を示すような記事です。

helpは「手助けする、手伝う」という前向きな意味が真っ先に浮かびますが、ここの例のように、「よくはないことを手伝う」、すなわち「助長する」といった意味もあります。メモしておきます。(UG)

Japan will share the bill for tsunami debris cleanup

Japan will outline a plan to provide financial help to countries that have to dispose of debris from last year’s tsunami, like U.S. and Canada, even if international legislation does not require it to do so.

The Japanese government would announce a plan to provide assistance to U.S. and Canada by the end of September, chief cabinet secretary Osamu Fujimara said.
Japan considers that contributing to the bill for the cleanup is a “way of expressing appreciation for the outpouring of support following the disaster,” according to reports in the local press.

An ocean current that runs from Japan’s east coast to North America has helped transport the debris that was swept out to sea when the tsunami hit Japan on March 11, 2011. Experts think that more than 1.5 million tonnes of debris was brought to sea after the tsunami.
Larger pieces of debris are already costing authorities on the North American shore millions of dollars to dispose of.
