立候補する
たまには政治のニュースをとりあげてみたいと思います。本日のDaily Yomiuri (08/27/2012)から英語表現を拾います。国会では野党欠席のまま民主党提出の衆院選挙制度改革関連法案が採決され、同党の賛成で可決されてしましました。自民党は「憲政史上類を見ない暴挙」と石原幹事長が言うように反発を強めており、公明党と共同で２９日に野田佳彦首相問責決議案を参院に提出する方向で動いているようです。
LDP prepares for upcoming party election
With the Diet expected to effectively adjourn on Wednesday, activity within the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party has been gaining momentum ahead of the LDP's presidential election in late September.
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe indicated on Saturday he would run in the election. As the ruling Democratic Party of Japan will also hold its party leadership election in late September, it is highly possible the two parties will be in election mode at almost the same time.
On Wednesday, a censure motion against Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to be submitted by the LDP and New Komeito is expected to pass the House of Councillors' plenary session.
意味はだいたい推測できますが、ここでは「[選挙で役職などに/選挙に/〜の対抗馬として]立候補する」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』、第4版、大修館書店)があります。
なぜこのような意味を持つようになったのか疑問に思い、辞書をチェックしてみたら『「競争する」から「競争に出る・立候補する」という意味が派生した。』という記載がありました。そして「立候補する」という表現にはstand forもありますが、これは主にイギリスで、runはアメリカで使われることが一般的なようです。多義語であるrunは以前Koyamamoto先輩が取り上げておられますのでそちらもチェックしてみて下さい。(EnDough)
