Japan turns up rhetoric against S. Korea, China

Japan turned up its rhetoric against South Korea and China on Friday over conflicting territorial claims to small islands in nearby waters, with Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda criticizing South Korean President Lee Myung Bak's recent visit to Takeshima as "illegal."
Noda told a news conference he will address territorial disputes with the two nations with "unflagging resolve" and that Japan will strengthen its surveillance of the surrounding waters.
While stressing the disputes must be dealt with through cross-party cooperation, Noda called on South Korea to ease the current diplomatic tensions triggered by Lee's trip on Aug. 10 to Takeshima "in a wise and cautious manner."
