Missing Junior-High Students, Teachers in Western Japan Found Safe
Nara, Aug. 14 (Jiji Press)--Local police said Tuesday they put under their protection 12 junior high school students and teachers who had gone missing in a mountain in Nara Prefecture, western Japan.
The 10 boys and two teachers of Uenomiya Junior High School in Osaka were found by a helicopter of the Nara prefectural police on a ridge some 3 kilometers west of Myojin-daira, a flat in the village of Higashiyoshino located 1,323 meters above the ground, shortly past 11 a.m. Tuesday (2 a.m. GMT).
All of them were confirmed safe at around 12:30 p.m., though two students were slightly injured and will be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said, adding the rest of the party members will return to Osaka by a bus chartered by their school.
According to their mountain trip plan submitted to police in advance, the students, members of the school's mountaineering and outdoor activity club, and the teachers were to stay at a lodge near Myojin-daira for three days from Saturday under a club program and meet their families at a train station in Osaka at 5 p.m. Monday to return home.
But they did not show up at the time and the families asked the police to search for them. The search began Tuesday morning.
