Prince Tomohito's funeral draws 660 luminaries
Around 660 people attended a funeral service Thursday in Tokyo for Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, who died last week at age 66 after a long battle with cancer.
Attendees included his second daughter, Princess Yoko, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako and other members of the Imperial family, as well as Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
Prince Tomohito, a cousin of Emperor Akihito, died of multiple organ failure on June 6.
A hearse carrying his coffin from his residence arrived at the cemetery shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Head priest Kazutane Soma recounted the prince's life, highlighting his contribution to social welfare activities and his battle with cancer over the years.
Then an emissary from the Emperor and Empress, who did not attend the funeral in accordance with Imperial custom, and other attendants bowed to pray in front of the coffin. After the funeral, the general public also offered prayers. The prince's body was cremated and the ashes buried in the afternoon.
