cracking the whipは「鞭をうつ」から転じて「人をおどして支配する」というのが辞書訳ですが，ここでは適さないと思います（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版，大修館書店）。LDOCEには，informal make people work very hardとありますが，これを文脈に合わせて「チームへの貢献を求めている」と解釈するのがbetterではないかと感じました。（Sugiuchi）
