Ministers declare Oi nuclear reactors safe for reactivation

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and three ministers will seek the resumption of two offline reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Oi nuclear power plant after confirming Friday that the reactors are safe and necessary for stable power supplies this summer.
Following the Fukushima nuclear crisis that erupted in March last year, no Japanese reactors have resumed operation since being shut down for mandatory periodic checks. The Nos. 3 and 4 reactors at the Oi plant in Fukui Prefecture in western Japan are the first being considered by Noda and the ministers for possible resumption.
The four have been meeting frequently to consider approving reactivation of the reactors ahead of May 5, when the only nuclear reactor currently operating in Japan is due to go offline for routine checks.
