Stand your ground
悲しい事件をきっかけに、またまたあのフレーズがアメリカのメディアを賑わせています。それが標記のStand your groundです。
事件は２月２６日、フロリダ州オーランド近郊のサンフォードで、フードつきスウェットを着てセブンイレブンからキャンディを買って帰宅途中のトレイボン・マーティンくんが、地元の自警団長でヒスパニック系白人のジョージ・ジマーマン氏（２８）に射殺されるという痛ましいものでした。同氏は警察に拘束されましたが、「正当防衛」が認められ釈放されました。しかし、The Trayvon Martin tragedyと名づけられたこの事件の詳細が明らかになるにつれて、事件の波紋が全米中に広がっています。
The Trayvon Martin tragedy is shining a national spotlight on "stand your ground" laws in at least 21 states.
The laws — in places such as Texas, Idaho and Alaska — allow everyday citizens to use deadly force against someone else if they fear for their life. They also say people do not have to retreat if threatened or attacked.
George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman in Sanford, Fla., fatally shot Trayvon as the 17-year-old was walking to his father's home from a 7-Eleven.
Police have said officers were prohibited from arresting Zimmerman because he claimed to have used "justifiable" force.
The case has triggered a wave of public outcry to change or repeal Florida's "stand your ground" law.
このstand/hold your groundという表現は以前、雑誌にも書きましたが：
１）to stay where you are when someone threatens you, in order to show them that you are not afraid
２）to refuse to change your mind about something, even though people are opposing you
という意味（LDOCE）で、良きにつけ悪しきにつけフロンティア時代から脈々と流れるアメリカ人の行動原理にもつながっています。
しかしながら、「銃社会」と呼ばれほど銃が蔓延しているあの国ではこの原理がしばしば過剰防衛、妄想防衛にもつながり、多くの人が悲しみの涙を流しているという現実もあります。服部くんが銃弾に倒れたあの時から同じ悲劇が繰り返されているのです。（UG）
