have a lot of deception
(UG)
SURPRISE, Ariz. - Ron Washington got his first live and in-person look at Yu Darvish's throwing motion Tuesday and it didn't take the Rangers' manager long to come up with some high praise.
"I was anxious to see him, too," Washington told a group of about 40 reporters after Darvish's 30-pitch bullpen session."What I got was that he is a power arm with finesse stuff. I didn't see him have any trouble gripping the ball, but that's why we're in spring training, to let him get used to a lot of that stuff.
"I'm a fan of his, too," Washington added when asked about the curiosity level associated with the Rangers new pitcher. "But he'll excite as many people as he needs to in the regular season. Right now, it's just about letting him get used to things over here."
Like catcher Luis Martinez, who caught Darvish, Washington was impressed that the 6-5 pitcher could keep the ball down in the strike zone. Many Japanese pitchers who have come to the U.S. have a lot of deception, but he might be different. He can power the baseball."
