Waikato police, in a joint operation with Auckland and Bay of Plenty police, yesterday seized methamphetamine, cash, firearms and chemicals from properties in Cambridge, Waitomo and Oruanui, north of Taupo.
A year-long police operation has uncovered one of New Zealand's biggest-ever P lab set-ups operating in the Waikato.

How to spot a P lab
P is a class A drug and its manufacture is illegal. Consequently, most people cooking P are discrete about doing so.
Things to look out for are:

• Strange smells
• Fumes/vapour escaping from windows or ventilators
• Presence of unusual chemicals not normally associated with a house
• Unusual activity and at unusual times
• Premises being used for purposes other than normal e.g. garage not housing vehicles,
• Windows covered/sealed day and night
• Person acting as if under the influence of drugs
• Unusual/erratic behaviour.
If you are aware of the following types of activity taking place, you should call the Police and detail your specific concerns. Note date and time of activity. Police respond to multiple contacts rather than one offs. So, if you want to get their attention, get other concerned neighbours to do the same.

Taking action on meth labs in your area will reduce crime and help ensure that property is not adversely effected by this pernicious activity.
Health effects from living in a
meth contaminated property
If you have previously enjoyed good health, have moved to a new property and begin to suffer the following acute symptoms, then you may need to investigate your home further:
• nose and throat irritations,
• breathing difficulties,
• burning and/or itching sensation of the skin,
• unexplained rashes,
• irritation and soreness of the eyes,
• feelings of depression and anxiety
• chronic sense of fatigue
• aching joints and body
If you started experiencing these sorts of symptoms after you moved into the property in which you live, specifically raise the issue of possible meth lab contamination to your doctor.
Exposure to lead, lithium and other heavy metals and chemicals which can be used in cooking meth can take longer to develop. These can produce birth and developmental affects in children, compromise function of vital organs and adversely affect mental function.
People with long term exposure to Meth lab related contamination, particularly people in the security services, are developing unusual cancers. This is expected to reduce going forward due to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they now wear. However, most homeowners do not possess the civilian equivalent of a Chemical Warfare suit!

Police set up a P lab at Fieldays

Police are using Fieldays to educate the public about the dangers of methamphetamine use. With a mock set up of a real methamphetamine lab on site, police are informing farmers about the possibility of cottages and rental properties being actively used as ‘P’ labs.
