マイケル・マン(Michael Mann)と言えば好きな映画監督の一人です。彼の記事だと思って読んでいたら、古気候学者のマイケル・マン(Michael Mann)の記事でした。ホッケー・スティック・グラフで一躍有名（？）になった人物のようです。The Independentから英語表現を拾います。地球は、マイケル・マンの映画よりアツい！？

論文の発表後にネットや学会などで議論された学術的な批判から、ハッキングなどをされプライバシーの侵害を受けたことに対してマイケル・マン教授が意見を言っています。
さて、赤字で示した箇所をご覧ください。最初にthe icing on the cakeという言葉を採り上げます。先日GP君が挙げていました。せっかくなので、ここでも扱います。LDOCE 4th Eds.であれば、 “something that makes a very good experience even better”という定義を与えています。他にも調べてみると「不要なもの」という意味があるようです。文脈を考えると、ここでのthe icing on the cakeは、「十分すぎるお見舞、仕打ち；やりすぎ」などがしっくりくるように思えます。
ちなみにCambridge Dictionaries Onlineによると、icingはイングランド英語でアメリカ英語ではfrostingであることが記載されています。
続いて、cherry pickについてです。さっそく『リーダーズ英和辞典』を見てみると「入念に選ぶ；えり好みして買う」とあります。LDOCEであれば、もっとわかりやすい。

定義内で、太字で強調した箇所からこの動詞の意味がグッとわかりやすくなります。ちょうどハッキングまでしてマイケル・マン教授の荒を探そうとしたことに当てはまります。
