SAN FRANCISCO -- Banana-Sam is home safe.

The squirrel monkey, which was abducted late Thursday or early Friday from the San Francisco Zoo, was returned Saturday evening by police, zoo officials said in a statement.

Banana Sam was spotted Saturday in Stern Grove by a visitor who managed to coax the 17-year-old primate into a backpack, police said.

On Friday, zoo officials said Banana Sam was snatched from its cage overnight after vandals broke into the zoo and cut the netting around the squirrel monkey pen. Today, zoo officials said police officers returned Banana-Sam to the facility at 7:45 p.m., where he was evaluated by staff and deemed physically healthy - though "hungry, trembling and thirsty."

"We are so thankful to the community and to the San Francisco Police Department for this happy ending," said Tanya Peterson, executive director of the zoo. "I know it's been extremely stressful for Zoo staff during this time but we are grateful that Banana-Sam is back at the Zoo where he belongs."
