U.S. to Station Troops in Australia Drawing Ire of China

President Barack Obama boosted relations with Asian-Pacific countries promising that the U.S. is here to stay. President Obama announced a permanent base for U.S. troops in Australia in a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. China immediately voiced its concerns about the presence of the U.S. in its neighborhood. The U.S. downplayed Chinese concerns by promising to work closely with the Chinese administration. The U.S. military presence is welcomed by U.S. allies Japan and South Korea who have nervously watched China expand its military capabilities recently. The U.S. will initially station troops in northern Australia in 2012. The U.S. currently has 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea and 50,000 troops in Japan. Obama tied in the military presence with the American economy by saying, “As the world’s fastest-growing region – and home to more than half the global economy – the Asia Pacific is critical to achieving my highest priority: creating jobs and opportunity for the American people.” President Obama is up for reelection in 2012.
