Soccer: Japan striker Havenaar to leave Kofu to play in Europe
SAITAMA (Kyodo) -- Japan striker Mike Havenaar is set to part ways with relegated Ventforet Kofu to play in Europe.
"I think he's going to leave," said a Kofu executive who spoke on condition of anonymity after Ventforet lost 3-1 at Omiya Ardija on the final day of the season Saturday.
Kofu finished third to last in the 18-team table and will return to the J-League second division after just one season in the top flight.
The 24-year-old towering forward has received offers from Germany's Stuttgart and Vitesse of the Netherlands, according to Kofu manager Satoru Sakuma.
Havenaar, whose 17 goals were the second most in the league, declined to comment on his future but criticized his team.
"I don't understand why we had to break our own team apart," Havenaar said.
"We earned promotion with a team effort last year. We lost only four times in the J2 but were turned into a defensive side this season. The team also released some of our key players. I just don't get it."
