Pravocalics
According to a study by Albart Mehrabian, it (is)has been proven that the impact we make on each other through conversation is 55% dependent on our body language, 38% on voice tone and 7% on words. Paravocalics is a study of the vocal effects that accompany words. It has five aspects: rate, volume, pitch, pause, and stress of the sounds. Each aspect has a particular meaning, and these paravocal tools are often referred to as vocal cues. Vocal cues provide information that cannot be conveyed by words alone. For example, when someone wants to express that the stock market is going up, he raises his voice slightly at the end of the sentence so that he can dramatize the utterance.
Vocal cues also help us to determine the sex, age, and status of a speaker. Emotions can also be expressed by the speaker’s paralinguistic presentation. When I ask my friend “(h)How are you?”, I perceive their feelings by not only the words, but also by his or her tone of voice.
We also use vocal cues in some aspects of persuasion. It is said that if a person sounds assured, the receiver credits him or her with higher degree of credibility. When I worked as a teaching assistant at a high school, my mentor always told me that if(you) I want to persuade (your)my student, talk with lower(voice)pitch instead of a higher (voice) pitch. So I tried to use lower (voice) pitch as much as possible, even though my voice is higher than the average person. I felt that(it)this advice worked.
As I (referred)mentioned that 38% of impact of messages is dependent on (voice tone) tone of voice, it is very important in communication. We use vocal cues to dramatize our utterance and it makes better communication combined with other verbal and nonverbal communication.
