ウェブ版The Guardianに日本の「失われた10年」についての面白い記事がありました。今回は、ここから英語の落穂拾いをしたいと思います。

インタビューを模したなかなか面白い記事です。さて、赤字で強調した箇所の意味について考えてみます。まず、“When was this?”の箇所です。 “In Japan, from 1991 to 2000, after a debt crisis became a banking crisis became 10 years of economic stagnation. Which should ring a bell, since for the rest of us it could be just around the corner.”と答えています。問題は、Which以下です。このwhichは先行の文を受ける関係代名詞です(『ウィズダム英和辞典』初版、三省堂)。文中のshouldは「推量・期待」のshouldで「2. a〈人物事が〉･･･するはずだ、きっとするであろう」という意味合いで使われています。
そして、ring a bellは「《口》記憶を呼びさます(刺激する)、〈名前などが〉聞き覚えがある、〈耳に〉親しい響きがある」という意味で使われています(『リーダーズ英和辞典』研究社)。ちなみにring the bellですと「うまく行く、成功する、心に響く」などの意味になってしまいます。そして、最後のjust around cornerですが、こちらは「角を曲がったところに」という意味ではなく「《口》間近に」という意味です。つまり経済停滞に直面していないイングランドにとってeconomic stagnationは、そう関係のない話ではなくイングランドにも降りかかる可能性を示唆しているのです。(Othello)
