イングランドで歴史物のフィクションが流行っているようです。イングランドの右派高級紙The Telegraphが伝えています。以前にブログ『常時英心』にも登場したguilty pleasuresも登場します。今日は，この記事から英語の落葉拾いをします。

We can't get enough of historical fiction, for besides self-improvement, it’s wonderfully exotic and comfortingly predictable.

This is no fairytale, no Mills and Boon, but it is the latest literary guilty pleasure. Stand back Jilly Cooper, brace yourself Joanna Trollope – for when the middle classes (the female half, anyway) add to their bookshelf, they’re now doing so with historical fictions.

Mills and Boonについて調べてみます。二詞一意(Hendiadys)なのかと思いましたが辞書には載っていません。固有名詞であると思われるので，Oxford Guide to British and American Cultureを引いてみますと，次のように説明されていました。

つまり本文では，会社の名前がそのまま，その手のジャンルを表す名詞として使われていることがわかります。最新の流行は歴史物のフィクションと書かれています。確認ですが，literary guilty pleasureは，文字通り「止められない文学作品」すなわち歴史物のフィクションのことを差します。そして，guilty pleasureを使用せず，書き出しにcan get enough が使われています。どちらの表現も歴史物フィクションの面白さを強調しています。海外の歴女(日本では最近あまり言わない？) の皆さんも歴史浪漫に首ったけのようです。（Othello）
