Fleet Street and be on one's high horse

イングランドの雑誌The Spectatorには，魅力のある記事がたくさん載っています。とくに書評や劇のレビューなどは非常に有名ですし，文章も凝っていて読み応えがあります。さて，今回は，雑誌の読者から寄せられた感想(Letters)から英語表現を拾いたいと思います。
No defending the tabloids
Sir: Toby Young (Status anxiety, 9 July) suggests that we are only shocked by tabloid phone-hacking scandals because we are ignorant of the ways of tabloid journalism. He seems then to equate phone-hacking hacks with ‘these Fleet Street foot soldiers’ who are busy protecting us from becoming French (shudder) — i.e. even more corrupt. What? Are all the foot soldiers also hackers? I’m not on any high horse, nor am I enjoying an orgy of sanctimony (or of clichés), but to suggest that we should not condemn too readily because the amoral, immoral or downright cruel pursuit of a story is some sort of ethically transcendent category in the search for a purer nation is the sort of editorial comment that makes me wonder if The Spectator really is for me. Ah, but then there’s Peter Oborne’s excellent article.

最初の強調箇所にあるFleet Street foot soldiersとは，なんのことでしょうか。Fleet Streetを辞書で調べてみると以下のように説明されていました。
Fleet Street「ロンドンの中心にある街(street)で，シティー(イングランドの金融・商業の中心地)とウェスト・エンド(ロンドン西部地区で高級住宅街などがある)の間にある。イングランドの有名な出版業者や新聞社などが集まっている。1980年代には多くの新聞社が，新しい印刷技術を持った他の街に移動したが，多くに人々はいまだにフリート・ストリートといえば，イングランドの新聞業界だと言及する。」(Oxford Guide to British and American Culture, pp.198-199, 加筆修正，訳，下線筆者)※図１参照
ここから考えると，Fleet Street foot soldierとは，｢新聞や出版業界で歩兵のように忙しく働く人｣｢ジャーナリストなど｣のことだと考えられます。Fleet Streetといえば，イングランドの出版業界のことを指すことばのようです。強調箇所の文章は，彼は今回の盗聴を，われわれがフランス人のようにならないようと――すなわち堕落から――守ろうと忙しくするジャーナリストと，同一視している，と伝えています。
つづいて，be on one’s high horseとはなんのことでしょうか。高い馬に乗っていると人はどう見えるでしょうか。おそらく，上から見下しているように見えると思われます。確認のため，辞書で調べてみるとa (one’s) high horse｢（上位）の人による高慢な態度，いばり散らす事｣(『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店)とありました。つまり強調箇所は「わたしは，高飛車になっているのではなくですね･･･」と訳せます。
ほかの記事にもありますように，今回のphone-hackingは，出版業やジャーナリストたちのみならず，世間の一般の人にも大きな影響を与えました。それは，この読者の反応からも伺えます。
最後に，このレビューもそうですが，『スペクテイター』には凝った文章がたくさんでてきます。また，“wits & wisdom”のコーナーにある“Mind your language”は――このブログ『常時英心』と同じように――新聞や雑誌などから，気になる言葉を調べ，使われ方や言葉の持つ本来の意味に焦点を当て，批評をしています。こちらの記事も大変興味深く，とても勉強になりますので，是非ご覧ください。(Othello)
