一軍と二軍 varsity

本日（6/ 5/ 11付）のDYから気になった英単語を拾います。Sportsの欄にはTokyo Dome welcomes Miyagi kidsという題で， 地震発生後に宮城県の少年野球チームが初めてユニフォームに身をつつんだ記事が掲載されています。

今回取り上げるのはvarsityです。早速辞書を引いて調べると，「1 《米》（大学・学校・クラブなどの，特にスポーツの）代表[一軍]チーム」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店，第４版）。さらに英英辞書のLDOCEでも確認すると，

1 AmE the main team that represents a university, college, or school in a sport

と定義されていました。また，ジーニアス英和辞典を引き直すと，junior varsityで「（大学・高校の）二軍チーム（略JV）」と掲載されていました。今回の本文もJapan's junior varsity teamなので「日本の二軍チーム」という訳になりますね。
再びスポーツの喜びを感じることが出来た子供たちから，私たちは感動をもらえたでしょう。元の生活に戻る喜び，スポーツが出来る喜び。この「喜び」がより多くの人へ早く届いていてほしい限りです。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
