gazetteの語源

JT OnlineにあったBlack ink, red bloodという記事から英語表現を拾います。

今回採り上げるのはgazetteという単語です。意味は「新聞」でthe Marlowe Gazette（マーロー新聞）のように用います（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。これまでもブログでthe Montreal Gazette（モントリオール ガゼット）などで出てきました。

この単語はイタリア語→フランス語→英語に入ってきたもので，新聞1部の代金に相当した昔のVeniceの小額貨幣の名（gazeta）から来ています（『研究社 新英和中辞典』研究社）。
ちなみに『プチ・ロワイヤル仏和辞典』（第3版，旺文社）によれば，フランス語ではgazetteは「新聞」という意味よりも「雑誌」や「定期刊行物」という意味で用いられることが多くなってきているようです。（院生 小山本）
