Quakes not increasing, but human risk is
Truly huge earthquakes seem to have become more frequent over recent years, partly because their impact on society has risen as vulnerable cities have mushroomed and become more fragile, and partly because of the rarity of gigantic earthquakes and their tendency to cluster for statistical reasons and nothing more. It's a matter of perception and coincidence.

今回採り上げるのはmushroomという単語。名詞で「キノコ；マッシュルーム」という意味があるのはいうまでもありませんが，今回のように動詞で「（キノコのように）速く成長［発展］する, 急激に広がる」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。同時書にはthe mushrooming population（急増する人口）という例が挙げられていました。本文のvulnerable cities have mushroomedも「災害の影響を受けやすい都市部が急速に広がっている」と解釈できます。
ところで，先ほど10:31に静岡東部で震度6強の地震がありました。小山本の実家がある中部も震度4の揺れを観測しましたが，小山本は無事です。（院生 小山本）
