複数の大学入試の問題が試験中に「Yahoo！知恵袋」に流出した問題について，今日も新聞各紙が一斉に採り上げています。The Mainichi Daily NewsにあったTime to ban mobile phones at university entrance exam sitesという記事から英語表現を拾います。
It remains unclear whether those who posted the exam questions attempted to help other people illicitly pass the tests or just wanted to enjoy watching how the public would react to their crime. There are various theories on how the culprits posted the exam questions, with some pointing to the possibility that they either made photocopies of or took photos of questions before uploading them. Some people suspect that multiple people were involved in the incidents.

今回は太字のtheoryを採り上げます。theoryというと「理論」という意味がまず想起されますが，今回は別の意味で使われているのは明らかです。
そこで辞書を引いてみると上記の意味の他に「推測, （…との）憶測」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。例文としてa theory of life（人生観），one's pet theory（持論），My theory is that ....（私の憶測では…だ）が挙げられています（同上）。
また，英英辞書にもtheoryの第一義にan idea that tries to explain somethingとありました（Longman Active Study Dictionary）。
以上から，今回のThere are various theories on~.は「〜について様々な憶測が飛び交っている」と解釈できます。（院生 小山本）
