bicameral

ねじれ国会や与党民主党の内部分裂で政策に関する議論がなかなか進まない日本の国会。それに関してJT onlineにあったGo on the offensive against LDP buffoonsという記事から英語表現を拾います。

今回採り上げるのはbicameralという単語です。辞書にはbicameralで「〈立法機関が〉二院制の」とあり，例文としてthe bicameral system [legislature]（二院制）が挙げられていました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。
ここで思い出されるのが，以前にブログでも採り上げたcameraの語源です。cameraは「筒型天井のある部屋」を意味するギリシャ語kamáraに由来し（同上），よってbicameralは「部屋が2つある」というところから，上記のような意味になったと考えられます。
