put the cart before the horse

ここで採り上げるのは，put the cart before the horseという表現です。直訳すると「馬の前に荷馬車を置く」となりますが，一体どういう意味なのでしょう。『オーレックス英和辞典』（旺文社）を引いてみると，「本末を転倒する」とありました。確かに馬が荷馬車を引くのに，馬の前に荷馬車を置いたら根本的なことを間違っていますよね。
