先日，アメリカではゴールデングローブ賞で盛り上がっていましたね。同じころ，イギリスでもNational Television Awardsというのが行われていました。
その中にCoronation Streetという作品がノミネートされていました。以下はDaily Mailからの引用です。

And while Coronation Street missed out on the Best Serial Drama prize to EastEnders, the girls appear to have been celebrating after the ceremony anyway, judging by their appearances this morning.

soapといえば「石けん」ですが，ここでは違います。ここでのsoapはsoap operaの略です。soap operaとは「（テレビ・ラジオの）連続（メロ）ドラマ」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。さらに辞書によると「しばしば石けん会社がスポンサーであったこと」が由来だそうです。
残念ながら，Coronation Streetは最優秀賞を受賞することはできませんでした。授賞式では華やかな格好をしていた出演者の2人ですが，写真の通り，翌日にはボサボサ頭の疲れ切った表情で帰路に着いたようです。（ゼミ生 b.m.）
