The melancholic tone can be heard in the highest echelons of power in San Mario, a mini-country of around 30,000 people that according to legend broke away from the Roman Empire in 301 and has had its own constitution since 1600.
今回取り上げる表現はechelon/e∫əlɑn/です。辞書を調べると，（組織・社会などの）レベル，段階，階層，階級；階層を同じくする人々とありました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』（三省堂）には，the top echelon「最上層部」，the upper echelon「上層部」，the lower echelons of society「下層階級」等の表現が紹介されています。私は下層階級と聞いてclassが浮かびましたが，LDOCEではclassを，one of the groups in a society that different types of people are divided into according to their jobs, income, education etc，echelonを，a rank of level of authority in an organization, business etc or the people at that levelと定義してありました。どのような人々が集まっているかに焦点が当たっている時にはclassが，組織や団体がどのくらいの力を持っているかに焦点を置く場合にはechelonが使われるようです。（ゼミ生 Cherry-well）
