Manga artists get gritty with portrait of life on factory floor

最近，少女マンガならぬ「工場マンガ」がブームになっているそうです。ブームの火付け役となったのが『とろける鉄工所』（講談社）と『シブすぎ技術に男泣き！』（中経出版）という2つのマンガ。これについてAshahi.comの記事の見出しを採り上げます。

A metalworks, with its drab setting and workers toiling at dull tasks, would seem unlikely to provide inspiration for a cartoonist looking to create a successful manga.
But Munehiro Nomura has done just that with his series, "Torokeru Tekkojo" (The melting iron works factory), a comedy about the travails of a welder and his workplace chums.

grittyはgrit（砂）の形容詞形で，「ほこり［砂］だらけの, 砂がはいった（ような）, ザラザラする」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味の単語。しかし，同時に「リアリズムに徹した〈小説など〉」（『リーダーズ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味があります。言うまでもなく，文末のfloorを意識したものです。
また，ここでのfloorはもちろん「床」という意味ですが，記事中にthe unheralded work of engineers at small factoriesとあるように，「陰ながら工場を支えている従業員（あるいはその仕事）」を比喩的に表現していると考えられます。（院生 小山本）
