Various pieces of artwork, made of common reed that grow wild at Lake Biwa, are lit up at an event in the Shiga Prefecture city of Omihachiman on Sept. 26, 2010. The event was aimed at promoting the common reed as a high-quality plant that cleans water and air. Some 140 pieces of artwork, mostly made by local elementary and junior high school students, were on display at the event. (Mainichi)

まず，名詞のgrassrootsで「農業地区, 田園地帯；農牧民, 農業地域民」や「民衆, 大衆」という意味があり（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館），gross-rootはgrassrootsがhyphenated adjectiveになって，単数形になったもの。ここではlocal elementary and junior high school studentsのことを比喩的に指していると考えられます。
次に作品の材料になっているcommon reed（ヨシ）ですが，これはcommon reed grassともいい，reedの定義自体がa type of tall plant like grass that grows in wet places（LDOCE）なので，grass-rootはここにも掛かっているのではないでしょうか。
加えて，今回のcaptionはイギリスの批評家Herbert Read（こちらもリード）が1947年に書いたThe Grass Roots of Art（邦題『芸術の草の根』）を意識しているともとることができます。（院生 小山本）
