今回採り上げるのはso much forという表現です。僕が中学生のとき，英語科の先生が毎回の授業をSo much for today.（今日はこれでおしまい）で締められてたのを覚えていますが，このso much forにはその他の意味もあります。
辞書を調べてみると，So much for Aで「A（物事）とはそんなもの」とありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。さらにLDOCEにはused to say that a particular action, idea, statement etc was not useful or did not produce the result that was hoped for.とあり，So much for以下の情報に対して否定的な意味が含まれることがわかりました。
以上から，記事のthe idea that the financial crisis would somehow even things up by wiping out a good chunk of the paper wealth of the plutocrats部分は，実際にはそんなことはないという意味で使われていることがわかります。（院生 小山本）
