Hospital patient infected with new antibiotic-resistant bacteria
A patient at a hospital in Tochigi Prefecture was infected with a new antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria found in India and Pakistan, it has been learned.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, this is the first time the bacterium has been found in Japan, and it is alerting medical facilities across the country.
Ministry officials say that tests run in August by Dokkyo Medical University Hospital on a patient for whom most antibiotics had not worked revealed that the patient had contracted a new antibiotic-resistant bacterium with the gene NDMI. There have been no confirmed cases of transmission from the patient -- who had traveled to South Asia before falling ill -- to other patients at the hospital.
Experts are calling for caution as it is possible for the antibiotic-resistant bacterium to spread not only within hospitals, but also to healthy people.
The strain is believed to have originated in India or Pakistan, and is resistant to most antibiotics. Infection has been spreading in Europe, and in August, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare called on prefectural governments to be prepared in the case of a domestic outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also called on member countries to take preventative measures against in-hospital infections, and to monitor infection status. Many of those who have contracted the infection are said to have received plastic surgery in countries like India and Pakistan, where medical fees are low.
