Hamilton mayoral candidate Roger Hennebry stands for "Rats Control" and east ward candidate Mark Servian has grown enormous ears and a giant beard.
The hundreds of election billboards around the city appear to be fair game for vandals – but some are more attractive than others.
Mr Hennebry, who is standing for mayor and leading the Rates Control Team for council, feels his team is being targeted and has had about 34 signs wrecked.
"Bob's [Simcock] signs are in the area and they are not being touched. We intend to catch them. It's the same people using the same stanley knife."
The "e" from Rates has been removed from all the vandalised signs and Mr Hennebry's face has been cut out.
"We had 10 vandalised on Wednesday night and last weekend we lost a lot."
The team has 340 signs scattered around the city and each sign costs about $50.
Mr Hennebry had lodged a complaint with the police.
However Tony Armstrong, who is part of the Rates Control Team standing for Environment Waikato, thought vandalism actually backfired on the offenders.
"I think the `Rats Control' change is quite cool and cruel. It makes people think `what did the word say before that and would I vote for the opposition if that is what they do'?"
East ward candidate Mark Servian said he was replacing or re-erecting signs that had been pulled down at least once a day. Most were just being pulled down, but a couple had been drawn on and another had been set alight. Another had a speech bubble coming from his mouth that said: "I am a lizard."
"If it's an amusing picture I have tended to leave it there."
Mayor Bob Simcock said a couple of his signs had been removed a few days after he put them up, while rival Julie Hardaker had a few stolen.
Other candidates reported a few of their boards had graffiti on them, but it was nothing unusual.
