"Peko-chan," the mascot of confectionery Fujiya Co., has undergone a makeover with retro clothing reminiscent of 1950, the year she first stood outside a Fujiya sweets shop.
The familiar life-size mannequins stand in the doorways of Fujiya's 650 outlets nationwide, welcoming customers with a lip-licking grin.
To mark the 60th anniversary of her creation, the eternal 6-year-old will don the grand-prize-winning outfit from now to mid-October at all Fujiya outlets across the country.
The winner was selected by the public from designs created by Tokyo Mode Gakuen students and unveiled Wednesday at Takashimaya department store in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward.
All 539 students specializing in fashion at the design school were assigned to design a new dress for Peko-chan as part of their course work. Thirty-six were selected for display at the department store during the Golden Week holidays from late April to early May.
Shoppers voted on the ones they liked best. The design by second-year fashion design student Saki Iwashima, 27, won Grand Prize. Her polka-dotted pastel pink dress is worn with a pastel blue jacket and accessorized by a purse shaped like a chewy paper-wrapped milk candy--a Fujiya specialty.
"I designed a casual dress in a style that won't go out of fashion quickly, in colors that Peko-chan has not worn before," she said.
