Himeji Castle is pictured on Aug. 23, 2010, surrounded by scaffolding ahead of full-scale renovation work on the structure in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. The castle -- also known as Shirasagi Castle (White Heron Castle) -- will be completely covered with protective sheets and a huge roof by the end of this year. The repair work is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2014 at the earliest. (Mainichi)
