57 percent of Japanese against making English the official work language: poll
Some 57 percent of Japanese corporate employees are against making English the official company language, a survey by the Mainichi Shimbun has revealed.
Fast Retailing Co. -- operator of the Uniqlo casual clothing chain -- and Internet shopping operator Rakuten Inc. have announced that they will make English their official in-house language by the end of 2012 as part of their efforts to enhance global competitiveness.
However, the online survey conducted in collaboration with portal site operator NTT Resonant Inc. indicated that 57 percent of those aged over 20 think using English as the official corporate language is not a good idea, while 43 percent responded they support the initiative.
By gender, only 38 percent of male respondents said they are in favor of adopting English as the official language at work, while nearly half, or 48 percent, of females gave the same answer.
Meanwhile, about 60 percent of those who participated in the survey answered they will study English if the language becomes the official communication tool at work.
Fifty-five percent of respondents believe that Japanese people should be able to speak English as fluently as their native language in the future.
The survey was conducted between July 23 and 25 on online research monitors selected at random, with a total of 1,089 members responding.
