INCEPTION

This mind-bending thriller will leave you debating its meaning with your friends for days.
Review by Edwina Carr

Roll Call: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard
Running Time: 148 minutes

Let’s face it, we’ve all met Leonardo DiCaprio in our dreams at some point but in the world of Inception, seeing the baby-faced actor in your slumber would not be a good thing.
Cobbs (DiCaprio) is a master of ‘extraction’ – trained to steal the secrets of powerful corporations by invading their dreams and searching through their subconscious. He lives a tormented life on the run, separated from his two beloved children who live in the US and constantly haunted in his dreams by his beautiful wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard).
So when he is guaranteed access to his children in exchange for an intricate act of corporate espionage, Cobb jumps at the almost impossible mission. He enlists the help of an elite group including fellow extractor and friend, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), gifted architecture student, Ariadne (Ellen Page) and Eames (Tom Hardy) – a master of disguises.
But rather than extracting corporate secrets as usual, their task is to plant a particular idea in the subconscious mind of company heir, Robert Fisher Jr. (Cillian Murphy) – performing what’s known as an ‘inception’.
With the help of architectural whizz Ariadne, they create a dreamscape comprising of three levels (three dreams within other dreams – confusing, huh?) where they will carry out the plan. As they delve through the different dream levels, the subconscious layers of Cobb’s troubling past are peeled back, turning their mission into a deadly one.
Director and writer Christopher Nolan (also director of The Dark Knight) shines in this blockbuster movie through the imaginative and detailed plot and complex, multidimensional characters. At times the action progresses so rapidly that it could take a few minutes for the audience to catch on to what is actually happening. However, the trippy CGI effects and incredible concept of exploring dreams will have your eyes glued to the screen for the duration of the film.
Why it’s worth your time
The constant action in this movie is guaranteed to set your pulse and mind racing. Oh, and you may have heard about the film’s ending – you’ll be debating its meaning with your friends for days.
