Why do this now, ex-Diet member Chiba?
The timing of Wednesday's executions, two days before the start of an extraordinary Diet session, has invoked a storm of criticism against Justice Minister Keiko Chiba.
Opposition parties are preparing to submit a censure motion against Chiba in the extraordinary Diet session beginning Friday.
They have described the executions as an attempt to divert criticism of her continuing as justice minister despite having lost her Diet seat in the House of Councillors election earlier this month.
Liberal Democratic Party Diet Affairs Committee Chairman Jiro Kawasaki said Wednesday: "Why didn't she make the decision [to execute] in May or June? Executions shouldn't be decided by someone who has been given a red card [voted out of the Diet] by the public."
Chiba became justice minister in September, but Wednesday's executions were the first ordered by her.
Kawasaki said Chiba's decision to order the executions after losing her seat showed disregard for the voting public's will.
At a press briefing in the Diet Building, New Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi said, "After losing her position as a Diet member, she won't be able to gain public acceptance of her signing execution orders."
Yamaguchi said he would demand an explanation from Chiba at an upcoming Budget Committee meeting.
Your Party Secretary General Kenji Eda said, "I just don't understand why she gave approval for capital punishment to be administered at this delicate time."
Death penalty abolitionists both in the ruling and opposition camps directed a flood of criticism toward Chiba.
People's New Party leader Shizuka Kamei heads a suprapartisan parliamentary group of lawmakers calling for capital punishment to be abolished, a position Chiba has previously expressed support for.
"If she has changed her beliefs, she should have explained to the public that her views on capital punishment had changed before doing anything," Kamei said.
Social Democratic Party leader Mizuho Fukushima said, "It's extremely regrettable that the executions were carried out without any serious discussion."
