Southern All Stars frontman Kuwata cancels tour due to esophagus cancer

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese singer-songwriter Keisuke Kuwata, the frontman of the popular band Southern All Stars, has an early stage of esophagus cancer, his management company said Wednesday.
Kuwata will cancel his nationwide concert tour which had been scheduled to start on Oct. 28, Amuse Inc. said, adding the 54-year-old will suspend his professional activities for at least six months.
Kuwata's new solo album will come out later than Oct. 20, the original release date, according to the company.
"I feel really sorry for the anxiety" caused by the announcement, Kuwata said in a statement. "I'll take some time for treatment and rest, and I'm sincerely looking forward to an opportunity to see you again. Until then, please wait for a while without worrying about me."
His cancer was detected in medical tests he received in mid-July and surgery is being planned for as early as next month, Amuse said.
The Southern All Stars made their debut in the late 1970s and are one of the few who have remained popular in Japan's mainstream pop and rock scene for about three decades.(Mainichi Japan) July 28, 2010
